In the wee hours of the evening of January 11, 2017, the U.S. Senate voted 51 – 48 to begin the process of overturning the Affordable Care Act, a law which has made high-quality health care and coverage affordable and accessible for millions of Americans, and in doing so has saved and improved countless lives. The House of Representatives later passed the same legislation, 227 – 198, on January 13, 2017, and officially beginning the repeal process.

The resolution which passed both the Senate and the House (and is not signed by the President) instructs the relevant committees in both bodies to develop legislation formally repealing the ACA by January 27, 2017.

The NAACP, which has long fought for affordable, high-quality health care and coverage for all Americans, will now advocate strongly that the Affordable Care Act should not be repealed until a replacement plan is developed which offers affordable high quality health care coverage to all Americans.
