DANGEROUS TAX BILL PASSES SENATE; SEE WHO VOTED WHICH WAY AND LEARN THE NEXT STEPS

Just after 1:30 a.m. on Saturday morning, December 2, 2017, the United States Senate passed, by a margin of 51 yeas to 49 nays, its version of H.R. 1, the “Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.” The Senate version of the bill now goes to a “House / Senate Conference Committee,” a group of members from both chambers and both parties who are charged with hammering out the differences between the House and Senate versions of the bill. Members of the “Conference Committee” are selected by the leadership or their parties, and the ratio of the two parties is roughly equal to the membership of the two houses. The “Conference Committee” will produce one final bill, which then must pass both the House and the Senate by an up-or-down vote and will then be presented to the President for his signature.

Once conferees are selected, the NAACP Washington Bureau will engage NAACP units and membership to prevent the dangerous portions of the bill and to use the tax code to promote Constitutionally-guaranteed equal opportunity and equal protection under law throughout our nation.
