Audre Lorde - A self-described “black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet,” Audre Lorde dedicated both her life and her creative talent to confronting and addressing the injustices of racism, sexism, and homophobia.

Local Advocacy

Since 1909, the NAACP’s mission has been to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights for all persons, and to eliminate race-based discrimination.  In Worcester, we are continuing that tradition through civic engagement, education and empowering individuals, families and communities.

Since 2013, I’ve had the privilege of leading the Worcester NAACP, and in that time we’ve focused on empowering Communities of Color by:

  • working with other organizations to bring in jobs and job training to Worcester,

  • registering new voters and encouraging citizens to vote,

  • hosting fair housing and political candidate forums,

  • hosting educational forums for parents of students in the Worcester Public Schools,

  • screening documentaries on various social justice topics with panel discussions,

  • educating our youth on their legal rights when approached by the police,

  • advocating for, and assisting individuals who’ve been discriminated against,

  • bringing the community together to stand against racism and violence,

  • and collaborating with the City of Worcester, profit and non-profit organizations, community and faith-based leaders to promote social justice and equity.

Looking forward, the national organization of the NAACP and its partners are fighting the battle against the threats to our civil rights put forth by our newly elected President.  Local units of the NAACP are preparing themselves to fight how these threats articulate in our perspective communities.

 

The Worcester NAACP will continue the work to empower Communities of Colors with special care for those who are new to our country.  We are proud of Worcester’s culture of welcoming new Americans and we stand with our city to protect the civil rights and lives of all residents.
